How to Avoid Being Psychologically Destroyed by Your Newsfeed — Parenting Through the Storm

Great tips here! Key points:

  • Recognize that there’s a difference between being immersed and being informed. If you’ve read the story in one newspaper, you probably don’t need to read the next three articles about the same topic. Check the news a few times a day, maximum. Get a sense of what’s happening. Then go get some sunshine and fresh air. The world will still be going to hell in a handbasket when you get back.
  • Stick to your usual routines as much as possible. I can’t emphasize this enough. Take care of yourself. Eat good foods. Exercise. Sleep. Hug your baby. Walk the dog. Have a beer with your friends. Visit your dentist. Call your mother. Seriously.
  • Allow yourself to feel all the feelings. It’s normal to feel anxious and stressed. These are tense times. Feel the feelings, give yourself the extra space and time to do so. Find a way to GET THEM OUT. Go for a run. Talk to a friend. Write a poem. Do some art. Scream at the TV. It’s all good.
  • Reach out — don’t crumble inward. Find others who are also in the social justice movement. Lean on them. Be it online or in person, find a group of like-minded people. We can’t do this alone.
